In 1973, the Marshall football team was still reeling from the 1970 plane crash that killed 75 people, including 37 members of the football team. The team had played just six games in 1971 and none in 1972, as they rebuilt the program from scratch. The 1973 season was the first full season played by the new team.

Led by head coach Jack Lengyel, the 1973 Marshall Thundering Herd posted a 2-8 record, winning their first game of the season against Ohio Northern and their second and final game against Morris Harvey. The team struggled with injuries and depth issues, but showed promise for the future, especially with the emergence of quarterback Reggie Oliver, who threw for 1,314 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The 1973 season was a key turning point for the Marshall football program as they worked to rebuild in the aftermath of the tragic plane crash. Though it was a difficult season on the field, the team's perseverance and resilience would set the foundation for future success.
